Minnesota State Park Series: Soudan Underground Mine State Park

The Soudan Underground Mine State Park is located on the Iron Range of northern Minnesota. Visitors put on hard hats, cram into a "cage" and drop a half mile down into the earth. Once on the 27th level (2341 feet below the surface) the journey continues in a rail car to other areas in the mine. We found the trip to be memorable, entertaining, and educational. It also made us appreciate our jobs; we couldn't imagine having to work there every day! Our five year old enjoyed it, but another little boy (probably 4) was terrified throughout the experience, so use discretion when bringing small children. There is a period of time that the group is in total darkness and the "cage" can be somewhat claustrophobic. However, for the most part it was an enjoyable tour and recommended.
